Today's plan was to keep heading south, maybe stopping at Granada but if not, the Mediterranean coast at Motril. So back onto the trusty A4 Auto-via, a lot of which seems to have only recently been constructed or at the least resurfaced. In this part of Spain we were travelling on a plateau at about 2000ft asl in an area given over to agriculture, though it did not look particularly productive.
However the area became hilly, then mountainous around Jaen with the fields and hillsides covered in literally millions of olive trees.
We later learned from the Rough Guide that most of the olive trees are owned by only a few families and otherwise it is a fairly poor region economically.
We stopped at Jaen for some shopping and lunch, the sunshine now getting warmer and the van heating very definitely OFF, then continued toward Granada. Although a stop to visit this city was in our original plan, we decided that as we would be back through the area later in the trip and the coast was within reach, we would continue. So once again very efficient signposting and excellent roads made skirting Granada on the Ronda a doddle.
However it would be most remiss to fail to mention some of the most spectacular scenery so far; the Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest mountain range which lies next to Granada. Once again photos from a moving motorhome don't do it justice, but here goes anyway.
A superb backdrop for a city!
Before long, however the (now) A44 had us approaching the Med and with the satnav programmed we quickly found our way to another ACSI campsite on the edge of the town of Motril. Booked in for a couple of days, a refreshing cuppa then a walk along the promenade as dusk fell before returning to Bertie. We've arrived!
