Lovely morning and one of our less hasty starts.
Serviced the van then off through the very narrow streets of Chateaudun to
regain our route south. Although we aren’t averse to using motorways, we avoid
all those with signs “peage” as
usually the alternate is pretty good. Skirted round Tours then picked up A10
for Bordeaux – great we’ll save some time. A few minutes later a “peage” barrier – oh bother, never mind
we’ll go for a junction or two before we need to get off to get fuel; we’re not
paying motorway prices!
A Carrefour supermarket turned up just at the right
time for fuel and a lunch stop then onward on the N10. We had heard that HGV’s
now had to use the autoroutes but there were an awful lot on the N10 despite
the proximity of the A10! Pushing on, the weather started to deteriorate until
we were driving through torrential rain and heavy traffic past Poitiers, which
we found very tiring and slow going.
It became clear that, although we had passed the
place we stopped at last year, we were not going to make Bourg-sur-Garonne, our
planned destination. However we did have a couple of others up our sleeves so
headed off the main road to a nice looking Municipal aire at Montlieu-la-Garde,
only to find it closed. Not to worry, there’s another not far away at Montguyon
so programmed the satnav and set off cross country to find just one other van
parked up and all the facilities open. Basically it’s the car park for the
local sports centre but perfectly adequate and free!
So as it’s just getting dark and trying to rain
again we battened down the hatches. Spain tomorrow.
